Platform:Nintendo 3DS

The first entry of the Resident Evil franchise into the 3DS gaming library comes as a rather shallow one. The game itself could be considered a byproduct of remains of Resident Evil 5 and elements of Resident Evil Revelations. The latter makes this game an advertising vehicle as well, as Mercenaries 3D has a playable demo of Revelations.

The main game is a slightly modified, simpliefied and action oriented version of the mercenaries minigame from Resident Evil 5. Since you can now move while reloading and shooting, the game is slightly more fluid and thus has a bit more action than the original minigame version. The 8 characters are actually a decent selection, but cannot make up for the fact that the game itself is rather limited to modified locations from Resident Evil 4 and 5. The game has a few different RPG elements like the ability to personalize character skills. But this is rather a nice addition than a fundamental change. It doesn't change the fact that the game itself is rather repetitive in the long run. The extra costumes are rather odd with the exception of a few choices. The online mode works fine although communication is limited to ingame commands.

The "Pilot" to Resident Evil Revelations is nice but also ridiculously short. The demo can be finished in perhaps two minutes. The 3D effects of the platform are decent and not overused in both, the demo and the main game.
